Working Together to Reduce Black Maternal Mortality

Most black women are suffering from health disparities driven by socioeconomic factors that contribute to maternal mortality

Even before the pandemic the maternal mortality rate was rising to peak levels in 2019.: black womens maternal mortality rates went from 37.3 per 100,000 live births in 2018 to 44 deaths per 100,000 in 2019

United States is the only developed nation where its citizens do not have guaranteed access to home visits or paid parental leave during the postpartum period

Rate for maternal mortality rates is also an issue for age gaps
40+= 75.5 deaths per 100,00 live births
25-39= 16.6 deaths per 100,000 (2018)
19.9 deaths per 100,000 (2019)
Under 25= 12.6 deaths per 100,000

There is an undersupply of maternity/postpartum care providers (midwives, doulas, etc.)

17% of deaths occur during day of delivery
52% postpartum
31% during pregnancy
